Turn Out

(2024)

LIU I-Ling's first evening-length solo "Turn Out" carries the pun often found in stand-up comedy, reflecting the essence of comedy as derived from pain. Through self-deprecation and satire, the work aims to reveal the scars of the creator's dance and life experiences amidst layers of laughter, uncovering profundity in absurdity. "Turn Out" combines movements and narratives, recounting various unexpected experiences in dance and life. After three years of development, the complete production, supported by NTCH, premiered in July 2024 at the Experimental Theater, receiving widespread acclaim and praise.

... and, or...

(2022)

“... and, or...” is a 25-minute duet centered on the theme of "Decision-Making." Choreographer Liu I-Ling delves into the dynamics of establishing relationships, exploring the fine line between pushing boundaries and overstepping them. The choreography is marked by intricate, precise, and sometimes sharp movements, demanding a strong connection and chemistry between the dancers. With interactions that vary from delicate caution to playful humor, from tense standoffs to moments of sulky withdrawal, the performance requires both dancers to attune to each other's timing and intentions. The absence of music shifts the focus to the dancers' breathing, bodily tension, and shifts in gravity, drawing audiences into a raw and intimate experience of movement and presence.

"... and, or..." received Jury Prize at the Yokohama Dance Collection Competition I in 2022
